This morning we woke up and visited with the Jackelope at Thunderbird Lodge.
We had some pretty amazing donuts at the continental breakfast too.
Next we went to the corn maze in Mitchell, South Dakota. This year the corn Palace is undergoing some renovations. However it was still pretty neat. Lots of corny jokes were told we watched birds eat the murals.
Then our three hour journey began. Much to his time-traveling delight, Paul took a nap around 12:00 PM and woke up at 11:15 AM. We passed through another time zone!
We crossed the Missouri River for the last time during this trip and were amazed at the change in terrain. We stopped at a rest stop devoted to Lewis and Clark, as we have been following the Lewis and Clark Trail for a large part of this trip.
Kim's favorite part of the entire trip so far occurred next. She fed prairie dogs peanuts. Right before the Badlands, Kim's favorite part of the entire trip so far occurred next. She fed prairie dogs peanuts. She crouched down to give a peanut to one and another came right up to her. She hung out with them for a while.
This one was getting a little friendly with Kim.
After all the prairie dogs were full, we continued into Badlands National Park. The views were amazing! Pictures don't do it any justice. We stopped at overlook viewpoints, explored in the mounds, and got stuck in the rain.
When we made it through, we stopped at the world famous Wall Drug got our free ice water. It reminded us of South of the Border at the South Carolina and North Carolina State line.
We continued on to Custer South Dakota where we are staying at the Chief Motel on Mount Rushmore Road.
We stopped at a family owned steakhouse for dinner. It was delicious. Then we went to a little ice cream/pie shop called the Purple Pie Place, which was also great! We were so exhausted we came back to the bedroom to sleep, did almost immediately!
Tomorrow is another adventure!
-Paul and Kim
